13 Oct Halycon House, Cabarita – Romantic beachside luxe
Halcyon House is an enigma. Once a 1960s surfing motel, that charged $60 a night, it is now a romantic beachside luxe hotel – perfect for a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary or any special celebration. The vision of two sisters, it was initially earmarked as a beach ‘shack’ to accommodate their families. However, they soon realised the allure of the location and the opportunity to create something unique. It has since become a magnet for honeymooners, romantics, families and locals.
Rising behind the sand dunes of Cabarita Beach, in northern New South Wales, it is the unlikely success story of a ‘hotel that could’. Beyond the familiar Byron Bay brand, it is testament to the mantra of ‘build it and they will come.’ And they have come, in droves, to experience this little slice of heaven.
Rooms with style and views
The views at Halcyon House are dreamy – both inside and out. From the vantage point of your Anna Spiro-designed room, you can enjoy a vista over an umbrella-fringed pool or a peak over vegetated sand dunes. It’s all very Slim Aarons…with an Italian twist.
Coffee sipped on an open-air terrace; a gin and tonic while sinking into the comfy lounge; or a poolside Margarita are all insta-worthy moments. The interiors are pitch perfect, combining contemporary and classic creating just the right ‘eternal summer’ vibe.
Things to do in Cabarita and beyond
The beach at Cabarita is one of those endless, sandy expanses, for which Australia is famous. There is a decent walk up over the headland for some whale and dolphin spotting. Or you could just chill by the pool. The township itself has come on leaps and bounds in recent years. There are cafes, groceries, and quaint gift shops gracing the strip behind the hotel. Kingscliff is just up the road, with even more distractions.
The hotel provides bikes for hire or you could just chill in the Halcyon Spa. Or pop into the Atelier for a selection of designer homewares and personal goods.
Further afield there are boutique distillers and brewers, such as Husk Distillers. The Tweed Regional Gallery which includes the famous Margaret Olley Art Centre, is nearby. And of course the famous Byron Bay is is just down the road!
A gourmet foodies delight
Halcyon House boasts its own hatted restaurant, Paper Daisy. Breakfast is included in your stay and you can opt to dine there for lunch or dinner. There are also lots of local options, including the hugely popular Taverna at Kingscliff. I can highly recommend booking at least one night’s meal there for an authentic Greek feast. Further afield is The Farm at Byron Bay, Harvest at Newrybar and Fins at Salt Village. There are a plethora of local cafes in the vicinity, if you can be tempted to stray from the delights of Halcyon House.
