The Perfect Australian Mini-Break
Sometimes a mini-break is all you need to revitalise the senses! Whether it’s beach or mountains, a few days away from the routine, can do wonders for the body, mind and soul.
In Australia, there are a plethora of places to choose from, in easy reach from major cities and towns.
Northern New South Wales lends itself to this kind of adventure, as the sand and surf meet the green rolling hills of the countryside and numerous opportunities to indulge in food and wine abound. An easy drive from Brisbane and a short flight from Sydney or Melbourne to the Gold Coast or Ballina airports, you can be sitting with a cocktail in hand before you can say “Is it Friday wine o’clock yet?”
Staying at Halcyon House, Cabarita Beach, is a real treat, with its Amalfi-coast feel and welcoming blue and white palette creating the perfect backdrop for the sandy dunes and azure sea beyond. Starting your days with a sumptuous poolside breakfast, before heading out for a headland walk and heart-starting swim, will bring your body out of hibernation in no time.
The choice of your daily activities is endless. You can lounge by the pool or use one of the on-site bikes to explore the area, or you can take a leisurely drive inland to the quaint town of Bangalow, with its boutiques, galleries, arts and craft shops and antiques. You could dine at the iconic Town Restaurant, which is a café by day and degustation fine dining establishment on some nights of the week. Or you could head to the nearby village of Newrybar, with its smattering of antique and collectable shops and the ever-popular Harvest, with its famous deli and providore store and sourdough bakery, as well as its local produce-inspired restaurant.
Further afield is the famous seaside town of Byron Bay, with its laid-back vibe, beautiful beaches, popular lighthouse walk and eating houses with views to die for, such as The Beach, overlooking Julian Rocks and Clarke’s Beach.
You must make an obligatory stop at The Farm, Byron Bay, to walk around the working farm, explore the deli and providore store and eat at the open-air Three Blue Ducks restaurant.
If you are keen to explore the area further, then Greek restaurant, Taverna, at Kingscliff, is a soothing spot, with pastel green and white décor and hearty cuisine to transport you to the Greek Isles. You also can’t go past the stunning view of waves crashing beneath the glass-fronted outlook of Pan-Asian restaurant Rick Shores at Burleigh Heads.
Or you could head back to Halcyon House to start your evening with a drink in the beachside bar, followed by dinner at the award-winning Paper Daisy. Retire to the comfy couches after dinner and contemplate what life would be like if this could be your ‘everyday’!
