Do detox teas work?
Our bodies are constantly detoxing via the liver, kidneys, cardiovascular system and skin, however, many factors, such as pollution, stress and dehydration, can inhibit effective detoxing. We need to detox to rid our bodies of toxins, so it is important to ensure we are detoxing properly.
Sometimes, we need a bit of help, and one of the ways which is widely promoted, is via detox teas. But do they really work? Naturopath and herbal medicine registered practitioner, Rex Miller, unpacked the ingredients of the #1 direct-selling detox and cleansing tea, Iaso Tea, to explain how it works.
Dextrin (or Nutriose) is a soluble fibre. It is recognised as food, so helps to satiate us, that is, alleviate our feelings of hunger. As overeating is the biggest cause of obesity, this is a vital ingredient to help us avoid excessive eating which can lead to weight gain.
It is also a prebiotic fibre, creating the right environment for probiotics (friendly bacteria) to work. Probiotics use fibre to ferment, which produces short term fatty acids, which are very good for our gut, as they are the main nutrients for colon health and play a valuable role in detoxing and brain health. Our gut has more neurons than our brain, so happy gut flora equals happy thoughts!
Cassia Augustifolia Extract
Cassia is a laxative, but as there is only a small quantity in Iaso Tea, it ensures gentle regularity, rather than excessive elimination. This can help if you are prone to constipation, but if you are finding it is having a dramatic elimination effect, then ease back on the quantity of tea you are taking.
Carica Papaya Extract
Papaya is believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and wound-healing properties and helps with the breakdown of protein, aiding digestion. It is also a powerful anti-parasite formula.
Matricaria Chamomilla Extract
Chamomile has an anti-spasmodic, relaxing effect, which can be helpful to relieve stomach pain, irritable bowel syndrome and aid in gentle sleep.
Overall, detox tea such as Iaso:
- Helps to cleanse via the bowel, kidney and liver
- Can help control over-eating
- Is gentle if used according to your body’s needs
- Is low GI and low calorie
- Can assist with weight loss by suppressing appetite
- Can help to relieve constipation and digestive issues
