Christmas for Couples

Whilst Christmas is traditionally a time for families to gather together to celebrate the joys of giving and receiving, for many people, the reality of spending time with the extended clan often isn’t feasible, or even desirable!

If you find yourself in this situation, the options for spending quality time with your one and only, are surprisingly quite numerous. How does indulging in a luxury lodge by the edge of the ocean sound?  Or, hiking in the balmy sunshine of a southern hemisphere summer?  You don’t have to forsake the Christmas wining and dining – you can just to it your way, at your own pace, without the pressures of present-unwrapping and niceties with relatives whose names you can hardly remember! If you must do the family thing on the actual day, then there is always the opportunity to escape post-festive season to unwind before the madness of the New Year descends.

Here are a few options for celebrating that perfect holiday season in cosy coupledom:

Bask in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales

From Sydney, it is a two hour drive by chauffeured limousine, if you want to do it in ultimate style, to Emirates One & Only Wolgan Valley Resort, a 7,000 acre conservancy reserve in the Blue Mountains.  There you can bask in the luxurious surrounds of heritage villas with every modern convenience, encased by lush mountains and country air, enjoying walks, pampering in the spa, horse riding, mountain biking, tennis, archery or just lounging in your private plunge pool. Christmas evening includes a yuletide-inspired degustation dinner, or any other time of the year, recreate the romance with a private dinner in your villa or in the hushed serenity of the restaurant.

Wine, dine and make friends with the wildlife in South Australia

Adelaide is the launching pad to some of the best wine regions in Australia, the oldest of which is the Barossa Valley, only an hour’s drive from the city.   Staying at the The Louise, spend a few days visiting local wineries, cooking with the chef, exploring farmers’ markets, breakfasting with the kangaroos and walking off the excesses!  Christmas dinner at the Louise is at the award-winning The Appellation restaurant. Head back to Adelaide for your 30 minute flight to Kangaroo Island, known as Australia’s Galapagos, staying at the stunning Southern Ocean Lodge. Spend a few days relaxing, enjoying nature trips to fur seal colonies and sharing sunset drinks with kangaroos – it doesn’t get much better than this!

Walk into Luxury in Western Australia

If you are intent on keeping the kilos off during the festive madness, then walking in-between your food and wine indulgences is a good choice!  You can opt for a 2-night stay at Cape Lodge with some walking on the Cape-to-Cape Track in Western Australia’s Margaret River region, whilst also partaking in the joys of tasting some outstanding wines and local produce.  Or, you can enjoy your own private Cape-to-Cape 4-day walk, staying at Smiths Beach Resort and Pullman Resort Bunker Bay, complete with gourmet food and wine experiences. If you don’t fancy the 3-hour drive from Perth to the Margaret River, why not take a 60 minute helicopter flight instead for the ultimate in luxury travel!

Live the dream on a Queensland tropical island

Taking “getting away from it all” to another level, a stay in one of Qualia’s luxurious pavilions on Hamilton Island is the ultimate in cosy coupledom. Dine in the privacy of your ocean-facing deck at sunset, kayak around the stunningly white sands of Whitehaven Beach, snorkel in the impossibly blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, play golf at one of world’s most picturesque courses, or just relax in your private plunge pool and remember why you fell in the love in the first place…

Taste the delights of Tasmania

Tasmania comes alive in December and January, with the arrival of the Sydney to Hobart yachts, the Taste of Tasmania Festival and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) MOFO festival. Stay at the Henry Jones Art Hotel if you want to be close to the action, or the French-inspired Villa Howden for some secluded luxury. After a few days of revelling, you will want to head north, visiting some award-winning wineries along the way, to Saffire Freycinet Lodge. Here you can live a life of ultimate peace and serenity, walking on secluded beaches, canoeing in calm estuaries, shucking fresh oysters or just indulging in the copious amounts of delectable food and wine on offer.
