We all crave a ‘local’. Somewhere you can go to eat, drink and socialise, where the staff know your name, where you always get a table, and where you feel ‘at home’. Even when we travel, finding that special place where we return time and time again during our stay, because it makes us feel like we live there, rather than just passing through, makes our journey so much more memorable.
When that local serves outstandingly fresh, innovative, quality food, and is located on an enviable spot overlooking the river, then you really have struck gold indeed!
Malt Pier is one such local. In a magical location underneath the Pier at Waterfront apartments at Newstead Riverpark in Brisbane, Malt has become the ‘go to’ place for residents and visitors who have discovered its allure. It is part of the burgeoning Malt group, which consists of Malt Dining in the city centre and Malt Traders at Emporium and the CBD.
Open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday to Sunday, it is always buzzing with cyclists and walkers on their morning ritual; brunching mums chatting about their day; those fortunate enough to work from home, taking some time out of the ‘office’; and retirees enjoying the fruits of their years of labour. On the weekends, there are families gathering for special occasions, friends catching up over drinks, and couples basking in the late afternoon sunshine over aperitivi at the bar.
There are some venues that get the mix just right, and Malt seems to have found the secret recipe. The intimate, light-filled space is modern and sleek and has the right balance of of informality and sophistication, effortlessly combining both al fresco and indoor dining.
The food never disappoints either. For breakfast, choose from a plate of avocado, hummus, almond dukkha, honey hazelnut labna and grilled pita; a chef’s daily open omelette; or zucchini and corn fritters with grilled haloumi, watercress and crushed pea salad, cumin cherry tomatoes and bush chutney. Combine it with a nutritional smoothie, Bloody Mare, Spiced Espresso Cocktail or celebratory glass of bubbles. Lunch offers a selection of light and more substantial meals from a charcuterie board, hot smoked salmon salad, Asian spiced calamari or pulled pork burger to tea smoked duck leg or braised beef cheeks. Save space for the famous Malt Brownie, consisting of salted caramel, peanut brittle and chocolate textures!
Manager Junior and the friendly staff will make you feel so welcome you will want to make it your local, even if you are only passing through. You have been warned…
